We’ve all heard that walking is a great way to lose weight and stay in shape.  But we still question it, and wonder how much weight we can really lose just by walking.  I’m going to briefly review some valid points about walking to lose weight, and what it takes to lose weight by walking.

As we all know, the most successful weight loss programs combine eating right with some type of exercise.  And, one of the easiest kinds of exercise to get going is simply by walking. It’s easy – you do it all the time, you can walk anywhere, and it’s low-impact, so it doesn’t put a lot of stress on your body.

I’m going to review some easy tips on losing weight by walking and post a summary below.  Of course, we all know that some of the important things you have to do besides just walking to lose weight is eating the right foods and eating less.  We hate to hear it, but it’s a sad fact.  The bottom line is you can walk all you want, and although it will help you, it won’t do near as much as if you begin to change your lifestyle and watch what you eat and how much you eat.  If you do all of these things, you’ll lose more weight faster, and you’ll feel a lot better – burn the fat feed muscle.  Now, I’m going to outline some quick tips onhow to lose weight quickly and safely by walking to lose weight:

  • Taking even a 10 or 15-minute walk each day will increase your metabolism, meaning you will burn more calories.  Time is tight for so many people today, but if you just take a little bit of time out of your hectic schedule, it’s time for you, it’s good to get out and the fresh air is nice.  And if you can increase your walk times as you can, it will help that much more!  A 30 minute walk is the best, but start slow.
  • Another good tip is whenever you find yourself wanting to ‘snack’ on something unhealthy, encourage yourself to go for a walk instead.  This is also true if you’re tired or under stress.  The exercise actually helps you feel better because if gets your circulation moving, and releases oxygen into your brain, releasing good energetic stimulation.  Get into the routine of going for a walk after you eat instead of just turning into a “couch potato”.  This helps that much more.
  • You’ll also find that once you get into a walking routine, you’ll feel more like exercising in other ways such as going for a bike ride, playing some games or sports, hiking at nearby parks, etc.   Start by walking on level ground, and slowly build to walking on inclines. This increases your workout some, builds your heart and lungs, as well as firming up or building muscles.  Dancing’s a Great form of exercise!  Just don’t expect too much of yourself at first.  Slowly build your stamina up.
  • You’ll learn that the more you walk, the faster you may walk, which burns even more calories.  Speed walking is a great form of exercise, and is even an Olympic event, although they walk FAST!  But you can also begin by alternating walking slow for a bit, then walking faster for a bit.  This also increases your metabolism and reduces body fat, making you fitter.  You may even want to start jogging, which is fine, but not necessary.  And depending on your physical condition and any injuries, it may do more harm than good, so you need to be smart about it.

  • If you have children or pets, it’s that much more important and beneficial to go for daily walks.  You all get out together, and they always enjoy it.  If your children are in a nearby school and you’re able to walk them to and from school, that’s another great way for all of you to get more exercise.
  • If you’re within a reasonable distance of work, school or the store, walk there instead. When you drive somewhere, whether work, shopping, etc., park further away and walk a little further.  It only takes two minutes longer, and you’re getting more benefit from it.  The same goes for public transportation or a car pool.  It doesn’t take a lot more time, and it’s a great way to bring in your day or wind down after a day’s work.
  • Just make sure you’re not wearing ‘heavy’ clothes and you have a good pair of walking shoes.  You don’t want to defeat your purpose by getting sore feet or blisters by not wearing the right kind of footwear.   The best kind of shoes are those with soft rubber soles that also keep your heels from getting sore. You can also wear thicker socks to give your feet more padding, but make sure they’re cotton, because cotton “breathes”.  Don’t wear high heels, narrow heels, or some other type of bulky or awkward footwear.  They’ll cause more damage than good.
  • Depending on how far you end up walking, think about bringing water with you.  Besides being the healthiest and most pH balanced drink you can give your body, you need to stay hydrated, and it will help keep your muscles and other soft tissue lubricated and flexible.
  • Get a pedometer so you can see how far you walk.  You’d be surprised how much ground you cover without realizing it.  Depending on the shape you’re in, or if you need to monitor your heart rate, bring a heart rate monitor.  And if you enjoy listening to music or something, you can bring your headset.  BUT, I urge you to Pay Attention if you’re being distracted by things like this, because a lot of people lose focus on what’s going on around them, and you don’t want to put your safety at risk.  You also lose some of the benefit of enjoying your surroundings, the air, trees, birds, etc.  Just be Safe.

  • Pay attention to the weather forecast, and if it’s not good weather to go outside for a walk, go for a walk in your home, your basement, or your garage.  If you have a bike put it on the foot stand and “bike” inside, walk up and down the stairs.  Go to an inside gym or arena. Get creative!  Don’t let the weather stop you from continuing to improve the way you feel.
  • One thing that a lot of people enjoy is getting a ‘walking group’ together to do this.  Many times you enjoy yourself more and not paying attention to how far or fast you’re walking.  It’s also a great social time while everyone’s getting in better shape. A lot of people actually get ‘work’ done while doing this.  Just start small and work your way up.
  • One thing I feel is very important is to stretch before you go for a walk or do any other type of exercise.  You should do this whether you’re just starting out at this, or in fairly good physical condition.  It just helps your muscles stretch and limber up, and helps prevent cramping.
  • Studies in the UK have actually shown that there’s a big difference between walking patterns of average weight people and those of overweight people.  What’s interesting is that overweight people don’t go for walk on Sundays.  Very interesting tip.

If you’re consistently walking to lose weight, increase the time little by little, or walk a little faster as you go, you’ll find you feel better And you’re losing weight doing something that’s easy and healthy!  Of course, as I said earlier, you need to be more conscientious about what you’re eating and how much you’re eating.  Try to cut down on the ‘junk food’ and eat more fruits, vegetables, etc.  There are a lot of healthy, good-tasting snacks and foods available now.  Take advantage of them to feel better about yourself!

In this article we’re going to look at twelve weight loss tips that work and how to lose weight quickly and safely. While these tips are simple, they’ll give you a Great start, and you’ll learn the best way to lose weight quickly, but also in a healthy and safe way.  If you do these simple things, you will start losing those unwanted pounds right away.

So many ask, “How long does it take to lose weight?”, or “Can I really lose the weight and keep it off?”  There’s a lot of conflicting information available about this, but it is possible to lose it and keep it off, and you can start to lose weight quickly right away.  I’ll review some of the best weight loss tips that work, and if you follow them, you will lose the weight quickly and safely and keep it off.

12 Weight Loss Tips That Work

  1. Eat a good, healthy nutritious breakfast.  An example is fresh fruit or veggie smoothies, which are quick and easy to make, have natural sugar (energy), and are delicious.  Throw some nuts or other natural protein in if you like.  This is the most important meal of the day, and you need it to maintain the energy and stamina you need.  If you keep your metabolism up, it will not only keep your energy level up, but this will help consistently burn more calories faster.  Breakfast should be your largest meal, reducing the amount you eat as the day goes on.  Dinner should be healthy and filling, but not large, because if you’re not active afterward, it turns to fat!

  2. Eat 5-6 meals a day.  Everyone’s schedules are so hectic nowadays, you think, “How can I eat 5-6 meals a day?!”  You can break portions or items up, and vary them.  It doesn’t take much time.  You can also bring good, healthy snacks with you to work or when traveling.  5-6 meals a day doesn’t mean large meals, but like my doctor told me years ago, it’s not only healthier for you and will help you burn calories throughout the day, it gives you continuous energy to burn those calories consistently.  Eating smaller meals every 3-4 hours will help curb your hunger, and you’ll eat less.  It’s also easier on your system.  It’s hard on your digestive system to process a lot of heavy food before you relax in the evening or go to bed, and it only turns into fat.  You need a nutritious and balanced diet with a variety of foods for long-term success.  Some things to include are whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts (protein-energy), lean protein and a small amount of good fat versus bad fat (trans fats).  These are Very Bad for you, and cause a lot of serious health problems.

  3. Don’t skip meals.  If you skip a meal, you not only lose energy, you’ll be hungrier so you’ll eat more, and you’ll have cravings.  As I indicated in another post, your body will go into “survival mode” and you’ll burn fewer calories, because your system will hold onto it as a fat reserve, so you’ll have more fat.

  4. Always have good, healthy snacks and drinks on hand. Fresh fruits, veggies, protein like milk, boiled eggs, cheese, nuts, low fat yogurt, lean meat or healthy organic jerky can provide the natural salt, sugar or protein you’re craving.  Natural foods without preservatives or additives are the healthiest for you, and don’t cause the health issues that processed foods or synthetic ingredients do.

  5. Don’t go to the store when you’re hungry.  You’ll buy much more than you really need, and a lot of times it’s the unhealthy foods that you’re hungry for or crave.  Eat a meal or snack before you go, take a list that you made earlier and stick to it.  It will help keep you from going through all the aisles of the store and buying things on impulse.  Buy the tasty and crunchy fresh fruits and vegetables, natural organic snacks without the additives, salts, sugars and fats.

Reduce salts, sugars and bad fats.  Processed foods, ready to eat, and take out have very unhealthy amounts of sugars, salts and bad fats.  Soda is one of the worst, as it has a Ton of sugar or refined sugar in it.  Natural foods and drinks that taste good and provide nature’s sugar are the best.  There are some very good sugar substitutes available, as well.  I like Splenda, and I’m particular.  Sugar causes mood swings and headaches, and serious health issues like cancer, diabetes and hypoglycemia.  You get the highs and lows with sugar, which is not only hard on your system, but you burn fewer calories because your energy level is like a yoyo.  You want to maintain an even keel to burn calories consistently, not a buzz, then crash.

  7. Drink plenty of water throughout the day.  Everyone should drink about eight 8 ounce glasses of water every day.  It’s the best thing you can give your body.  It not only helps you fill up so you don’t eat as much, it acts like a diuretic, which reduces your water retention.  It also helps your body digest food more efficiently, so it’s not as hard on your system.  You’ll also be more hydrated so your system, muscles, everything will be in better condition, work more efficiently, and you’ll feel better.

  8. Restrict where you eat at home.  Try to eat at the table with family or friends instead of conveniently munching down in the kitchen, in front of the t.v., or while commuting.  It helps cut down on how much and how often you’re eating, and you’d be surprised how many calories you’re consuming while “snacking”.
  9. Eat and chew your food more slowly.  Eating at the table with your family and visiting more rather than focusing on throwing your food down helps.  We’ve all heard “chew your food 100 times”.  Although that’s a lot, if you take smaller bites, slow down while you’re eating and chewing, and chew more before you swallow, it not only helps you feel full more quickly, it’s much easier on your digestive system.  It takes about 20 minutes for your stomach to signal your brain that you’re full, so slow down and enjoy your food and visiting with family and friends.  You won’t overeat this way, which means you’ll reduce your calorie intake to lose weight, because you’re giving your system time to do its part, and you’ll feel full more quickly.

  10. Write down everything you eat and drink each day.  It might sound like a pain but it doesn’t take any time, and you’d be amazed how much more you eat and drink than you even realize.  You can use your list to remind yourself, “Oh, I already had this candybar or ice cream, so I’ll have this instead.”  You’d be surprised how much less you’ll eat, which means you’re eating fewer calories, and it encourages you to eat more healthy foods because you already had your “treat”.

  11. Have a support system, whether a family member or friend, even someone online for moral support.  You don’t have to do it on your own.  There are a lot of good support systems available, so take advantage of them.  You can help each other this way.  Find the good things to get interested in, good health-related support websites, forums, new healthy recipes to try, etc.  You’re not alone, and if you re-focus, that’s most of the battle…  There are good free weight loss tools like calorie counters and calculators, activity calculators, etc. that will help you learn how many calories you’re really consuming versus how many you’re burning. There are BMR (basal metabolic rate) calculators that help you figure out your ideal goal weight based on your specific individual factors.

  12. Reward Yourself for your progress by doing something you’ve been wanting to do, having a makeover, buying those shoes or that dress, having your hair done, or going somewhere you’ve been wanting to see.  Don’t reward yourself with food, because that only defeats your purpose.  You need to re-condition your brain and thought processes.

Everyone wants a “quick fix” like all the weight loss pills and drinks available today that promise fast weight loss, but can also be dangerous and unhealthy.  Below are some real, proven simple ways to lose weight fast; BUT, as you know, losing weight has to involve Discipline and Determination if you’re going to succeed.  Here are some simple things you can do that won’t cost you an arm and a leg, and are the healthiest ways to lose weight:

Reduce / Moderate:

  • Sugars, especially processed sugar (sucrose-white sugar).  Besides adding unhealthy weight, it robs your system of nutrients, which causes “cravings” and “binges”.  It kills good bacteria and suppresses your immune system.  It’s “toxic” to your system, depletes your potassium and magnesium, and is responsible for many diseases and degenerative conditions. It’s in more foods than you realize, and soda is the Worst. Look for sugars, fructose, lactose, syrups, malto-dextrin and many other forms of it in the “ingredients”.

  • Processed foods are loaded with additives, preservatives, coloring, sugar, salt, starch, unhealthy fats and oils, and “natural and artificial flavors”, most of which are chemicals.  The healthy nutrients to protect your heart, like soluble fiber, antioxidants, and “good” fat are removed.  Corn syrup and “partially hydrogenated oils” are BAD. There are a lot of “mystery ingredients” in processed foods that you can’t even pronounce, and can damage your body. If you don’t know what it is, you probably shouldn’t eat it!
  • Junk” foods.  We all know this, but just being more conscientious about what you’re eating or drinking will help a lot.  Again, look at the ingredients.
  • Starches (i.e., complex carbohydrates, modified starch-BAD) are in so many foods; again, read the labels.  Prepared/processed foods have a ton including pasta, bread, pancakes, cereals, and rice.  Good natural foods with starch include seeds, fruits, roots, corn, potatoes, wheat, and rice.
