Best Foods to Lose Weight: Metabolism Boosting Foods and Other Good Foods for Weight Loss


Runner’s World lists the 20 best foods to lose weight, and I’ll list them in this post.  They talk about metabolism boosting foods and foods with negative calories as good foods for weight loss, and these are great weight loss tips that work.  I’ll set out the best foods to lose weight below for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and desserts.  You know avid runners are very into foods that help increase metabolism for energy, and Runner’s World should know what they are.

I’ll provide a basic list of the 20 best foods to lose weight and provide a link to Runner’s World so you can learn more if you like.  If you concentrate on making diet changes over a year and stick to the plan, you can lose a lot of weight.  Many of these foods will help you reduce 100 calories and more from just one serving.  You can save 15,600 calories in a year just from changing this one food item, and you lose one pound for every 3,500 calories you cut.  Each time you substitute one food item, you’ll double that weight loss.  And DON’T SKIP BREAKFAST.  I ‘preach’ this all the time, but it really is the most important meal of the day, and gives you the energy to burn more calories throughout the day.  Following is a summary of the 20 best foods to lose weight by meal.

The below meal plans include metabolism boosting foods recommended by Runner’s World, and they’re all good foods for weight loss, as well as some foods with negative calories.  I’ll be writing about these in more detail in upcoming posts:

BREAKFAST:

  1. Homemade raisin bran
  2. Scrambled egg whites with greens
  3. A balanced diet shake
  4. A frozen fruit smoothie
  5. Plain toasted bagel (Lender’s) with natural jelly

LUNCH:

  1. A grilled vegetable burger
  2. An “Alvarado Street” sprout wheat tortilla
  3. A Subway roast beef sub
  4. “Health Valley” chili 
  5. Plain tossed salad with croutons rather than salad dressing

DINNER:

  1. Spaghetti squash
  2. “Papadini” pure lentil, high protein bean pasta
  3. “Idaho Supreme” potato pasta
  4. “Advantage 10″ pizza 
  5. “Barbara’s mashed potatoes”

SNACKS:

  1. Frozen bananas, blueberries and/or grapes
  2. Dried mango, papaya and/or dates
  3. “Glenny’s” cinnamon apple Soy Crisps (low fat)

DESSERTS:

  1. “Chocolate Dreams” cookies
  2. “Haagen Daz” chocolate sorbet

 


 

Good Foods for Weight Loss and Foods with Negative Calories

This gives you a basic list of the 20 best foods to lose weight according to Runner’s World.  I’ll go into more detail of these metabolism boosting foods in the next post.  They’re very good foods for weight loss, and many are foods with negative calories.

If you know what fat burning foods and vigorous exercise routines to do, it will help you lose your body fat.  Increasing your protein intake helps reduce your appetite and recover more quickly from workouts.  If you follow the plan which includes changing your lifestyle and eating habits, you’ll succeed.  It’s important to continue eating food you like in moderation, but you need to know what types of foods will help your body burn fat when you exercise.  Fat burning diets include things like:

  • Fruits and vegetables because they have high water content, they’re filling, and they give your body the vitamins and minerals it needs
  • High fiber, whole grain “complex” carbohydrates like brown rice, oatmeal, whole wheat pasta and breads (make sure they’re 100%) give you more fiber and higher energy levels for a longer period of time
  • Reduce or eliminate “refined” carbohydrates like white breads, pastas, rice, etc., because they have more calories and very little nutritional value
  • Healthy fats from things like peanut butter, olive oil or flaxseed oil and avocados
  • Drink a lot of water.  You should drink at least 6-8 Large glasses of water a day, the more the better.  It has zero calories, it fills you up and hydrates your body to burn more calories more efficiently
  • If you don’t eat enough calories for your age, activity level and size to “fuel” your body, you won’t lose weight, because you won’t have energy to burn calories
  • You need a good amount of healthy protein like poultry and egg whites, skinless poultry, lean beef or fish, nuts and beans, and low fat dairy products

Fat Burning Recipes

Fat burning recipes can include things like low carb, high protein items like pancakes or cultural cuisine, quiche, baked, grilled or steamed fish, pizza and stir fry.  Here’s one of the fat burning recipes to try that only takes about 35 minutes to prepare and serve:

Fat Burning Pizza

  • 1 12 oz whole wheat or whole grain pizza crust like Boboli
  • 1/4 c pizza sauce
  • 1/2 c frozen spinach (thawed and drained well)
  • 1/4 sm red onion thinly sliced
  • 1 c shredded mozzarella cheese (part skim)
  • 6 medium sliced white mushrooms
  • 1/4 c ricotta (part skim)
  • 2 T grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 T extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 t balsamic vinegar
  • 6 ozs cooked, chopped chicken

1.  Cook 6ozs of chicken and cut into small chunks

2.  Preheat oven to 450 degrees and put large pizza
pan or baking sheet on the bottom of the oven to preheat it

3.  Spread pizza sauce on the pizza crust, then spinach and onion, and sprinkle with mozzarella and mushrooms

4.  Put the ricotta on and sprinkle with parmesan.  Put the chopped chicken on it, then drizzle the olive oil all over it

5.  Move the pizza to the preheated pizza pan or baking sheet and bake until the crust is puffy and starting to color on the edges and the cheese is melted.

6.  Take the pizza out of the oven and preheat the broiler.  Put the pizza back in and broil until the cheese is brown and bubbling.

7.  Take it out and let cool for 5 minutes, sprinkle with balsamic vinegar, slice and serve

This fat burning recipe makes 6 servings with each serving containing about:

287 Calories
22 grams of Protein
30 grams of Carbohydrates
10 grams of Fat
5 grams of Fiber
