Dr. Kaplan marketed and sold his weight loss approach to other primary care physicians (PCPs) as “licensees” across the U.S.   The doctors at each of these participating medical weight loss clinics are claimed to be experts in obesity, fitness, nutrition, exercise, weight loss prescription medicines, weight loss counseling, weight related illness behavioral modification and exercise.  The physicians get an ‘exclusive territory’ to operate under the CMWL’s brand.

The doctors basically create their own “center for medical weight loss” where they see their primary patients and schedule hours to see new weight loss patients.  They receive training from Dr. Kaplan, and have access to clinical studies and research.  The Medical Weight Loss Center also offers seminars featuring bariatric medicine experts.

Center for Medical Weight Loss Program

The Center for Medical Weight Loss program focuses on treating people looking for cosmetic and medical weight loss, 50% female patients needing to lose 20 pounds or less, and 50% needing to lose 40-100 pounds.  Patients are ‘typically’ put on low calorie diets (800-1200 calories a day) of company shakes, nutrition bars, and sometimes prescription appetite suppressants.  As they get near their goal, they’re eased back onto food.  Dr. Kaplan says patients will initially have weekly appointments then taper off, depending upon their progress.   The counseling is said to be done by the doctor himself.  There are four steps in joining:  schedule your consultation, meet the doctor and staff, find the plan that’s right for you, and start your personalized program.

The average cost of this program is hard to narrow down.  The meal replacements cost is $105/week.  If the Phentermine prescription appetite suppressant’s used, it costs about $30 per month.  I would guess that depending on which program you follow, that cost could be hundreds/month.  Many patients stay on the plan for a year or more, and many are repeat patients.

The CMWL has added some food options to its meal replacement line including hot soups and snack foods, and has more weight loss maintenance offers.  It now offers “Capsiate Natura“, which is a natural metabolism enhancer.

The Center for Medical Weight Loss (NOT “Medical Weight Loss Center”) offers three phases in their programs:  Quick Start, Transition, and Maintenance, including food, exercise, behavioral counseling and prescription medication.  There are four plans including:

  • Low Calorie Program (LCP) including liquid diets, meal replacement formulas, protein bars and soups with continuing education, exercise and counseling.
  • Modified Program
  • Bariatric Surgery and
  • Prescription Drug Program using FDA approved prescription diet pills (usually Phentermine) with counseling and exercise

Center for Medical Weight Loss Review Conclusions

This seems to be a well supervised medical program; however, some critics question whether two day seminars are sufficient training for the doctors.  There are also questions whether the doctors are really knowledgeable about nutrition, fitness and exercise, weight loss counseling or behavioral modification.  The actual costs of the programs aren’t revealed, and it varies with everyone.  There isn’t any real clinical evidence supporting the overall or long-term effectiveness of this program, and if there’s not a center located near you, then it doesn’t look like you can participate.

There’s a big difference between the two. But it’s a common mistake to talk about weight loss when we are really talking fat loss. The main difference between weight loss and fat loss is that you can lose weight quite easily and very fast through dehydration or water loss, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve lost fat. At the same time, you can lose fat through vigorous muscle building exercises which allows you to lose fat but not necessarily lose weight. But those are some of the topics I cover in my book, “How Do I Lose That Fat” and out of the scope of this article.  In this article and for the sake of simplicity, we’ll deal with just two very easy but extremely helpful weight loss tips that work, and ARE ESSENTIAL for fast fat loss.

How to Lose Weight Fast, 2 Shortcuts to Fast Fat Loss

First, we look at portions. Then, we’ll give you an overview of lifestyle change. After you’re finish reading this article, you’ll be able to kick-start your mission of looking great, feeling more healthy, and keeping the fat off by changing your habits.

1.  Be watchful of your portions.  As a kid, we were always told to finish everything on our plates. As an adult, you don’t have to. It’s really not rude to leave a little food on your plate. Because if you want to lose pounds fast, you really need to be aware of your portions. For example, a single serving of cooked spaghetti is 1/2 cup. However, if you were to order a plate of spaghetti at an Italian restaurant, they would generally pile on your plate the equivalent of four servings of spaghetti. So, one of the principal techniques you must learn in order to lose weight is to be strict with your portions and not feel that you have to clean your plate. Focus on what represents a portion and determine how many portions you will eat, then only eat those portions.

2. Make it a lifestyle change.  Losing fat is not just about eating less or dieting. It’s about lifestyle change and you need to be able to recognize that you are not just trying another short-lived diet, but you’re making permanent changes to your lifestyle. Diets as a rule are short-term changes to your eating routine. The very label of dieting suggests temporary! That’s why they don’t really work. So if you really want to lose fat and keep it off for good, you need to change your habits for keeps. So what you want to do is to develop new eating habits that don’t just cease when you reach your target weight but rather are permanent changes for a lifetime of success that will maintain your ideal body shape.

You would have heard that to lose weight you need to burn more calories than you take in. So if you have smaller portions, the right type of food that boosts your metabolism and helps you lose fat you are halfway there. Then you need to increase your activities a little as well. If you do a bit of walking, a little running and some gym workout, you’re on the right track. This is how to lose weight and keep those pounds off permanently.

Weight Loss Update on FDA Panel Recommending Making Lap-Band Surgery Available to 12 Million More People

There’s a great article from the Alliance for Natural Health organization about the FDA recommending making lap-band surgery available to 12 million more people.  It indicates how more than 1/3 of our population is obese, and about 15 million qualify for this procedure.  However, the FDA recommends making this available to the less obese, as well, or 12 million more.  There are risks involved obviously, including ulceration, swallowing difficulty, gastritis, dehydration, weight regain, constipation and even death. The lap band can slip or leak, and the stomach can get blocked or even slip, and the lap-band can erode into the stomach.  It’s also a very expensive procedure.

Another FDA advisory panel recommended approving weight loss drug, “Contrave”, indicating that the benefits of this diet pill outweight the dangers of an elevated pulse and blood pressure.  They also said that a large study of the cardiovascular risk of the drug “can wait until after the drug is approved”??!

Contrave combines two approved drugs that target different parts of your brain that influence cravings and appetite.  It contains “Bupropion”, an anti-depressant that’s also used for smoking cessating, and “Naltrexone”, which is a treatment for alcohol and pain killer addiction.  Many studies show the addictive qualities of the conventional antidepressant drugs, so many people could become addicted to an anti-depressant.

The FDA has two standards of effectiveness for any weight loss drug that it reviews.  It’s suppose to help patients lose at least 5% of their weight over 56 weeks or 13 months.  For example, a 300 pound man would lose only about 15 pounds during that time.  It’s suppose to show a 5% benefit over a “placebo”.  Contrave met the first standard, but failed the second one.  However, the panel’s recommending its approval despite this.

This comes following Glaxo Smith Klein petitioning the FDA to stop supplement producers from making weight loss claims about their products at all–  If it’s approved, only FDA-approved drugs would be able to do this (fine by me).

As I’ve said before, the FDA  banned the weight loss pill “Hydroxycut” due to indication of severe health issues.  In 2009 they identified 72 over-the-counter weight loss products that could have adverse health affects.  This included “Sibutramine”  as a prescription, “Rimonabant” not yet approved, and “Phenolphthalein”, being researched as a ‘cancer-causing’ agent.  To identify false claims on fast weight loss supplements, only accept statements made by impartial, governmental or educational agencies, researchers or scientists.  Talk to your doctor.  They have reliable, up-to-date information about prescription and over-the-counter weight loss aids.  And Do Your Research.  Don’t trust ‘personal testimonials’.

According to WebMD, using a natural liver detox diet to remove toxins from your body sounds good, but most have little supporting scientific data.  They’re very restrictive, and can be harmful if not used exactly as indicated.  Some potentially harmful toxins they’re designed to remove are caffeine, alcohol, additives and preservatives like artificial sweeteners, sugar, chemicals and pesticides to grow and prepare food, pollution, even water if it’s not totally pure.
